Project Power paired with Lagunitas 12th of Never Ale

“Project Power” is a 2020 superhero film directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, with script by Mattson Tomlin.  The movie stars Jamie Foxx, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Dominque Fishback.  The film follows three very different people who team up to take down the New Orleans distribution of a drug that gives people superpowers, but only for five minutes at a time.  This unites a police officer, who takes the drugs in the pursuit of his job, the drug dealer, who sells him the drugs, and the drug manufacturer’s original test subject.  As an added twist, the trio must save the original test subject’s daughter, who has powers without the help of the drug, who is being held hostage by the drug maker.  Newcomer Dominque Fishback give some very solid performances in the film, which will lead to bigger roles for her down the line.  The film is a crazy mash up of a lot of different and yet familiar ingredients and produces attention grabbing fun polished action but fails to say anything new about having great powers.  The film locks itself into a tone that a lot of Netfilx action films have of anxiety and doom.   The film was released on Netflix in August of 2020.

The Beer Lover’s Guide To The Movies pairs this film with Lagunitas Brewing’s 12th of Never Ale.  This American Pale Ale has an ABV of 5.5%.  It is straw golden in color with plenty of carbonation.  It is smells of piney with tropical fruits – think pineapples, mangos, and bananas.  It tastes of bitter grapefruit at first, then a bit of spicy, smoke, citrus and tropical fruits.  It is a great example of this type of beer.  It goes well with this summer release, because it is balances out the feeling of anxiety and doom the film gives off, and instead of giving you something familiar like the film, the film gives you something interesting and new.
